Belay devices are mechanical pieces of climbing equipment used to control a rope during belaying. A belay device acts as a brake on the climbing rope by applying friction to it. A Gri-Gri is a self-braking belay device that have a camming mechanism that locks down on the rope when a sudden force is applied to it. They operate much like your car’s seatbelts. Gri-Gri is the ONLY belay device accepted in our facility. A forged metal link with a spring-loaded gate used to clip two pieces of gear together or gear to a rope. Snug-fitting shoes with high-friction rubber soles and carefully designed edges that allow climbers to stand on tiny footholds. A waist belt with leg loops that allow a climber to be comfortable while safely tied to the rope. A harness keeps a climber’s weight on his waist and hips when falling, lowering or rappelling. A climbing rope is the strong nylon cord used by climbers for protection and safety while climbing. Ropes simply attach climbers to each other and the climbing wall to protect the climber from hitting the ground after a fall. Simply, climbing is an ascent completed for the athletic and mental challenge. The skills and specialized equipment required for technical climbing are what differentiate it from hiking. An auto-belay is a device that is attached to the top off the climbing wall and allows you to climb top-rope without the need of a partner/belayer. Our gym is equipped for top-roping, auto-belays, and bouldering. We do not currently offer lead climbing. Our professionally equipped climbing walls are periodically reset to challenge everyone from novice to expert climbers. Bouldering is a style of rock climbing undertaken without a rope and normally limited to short climbs over a padded mat–called a crash pad or bouldering mat–so that a fall will not result in serious injury. Must be at least 12 years old to boulder at our facility. Top-roping is a style in climbing in which a rope, used for the climber’s safety, runs from a belayer at the foot of a route through one or more carabiners connected to an anchor system at the top of the route and back down to the climber. Top-roping is ideal for beginners since they can concentrate on climbing techniques rather than worry about the effects of gravity Belaying is the technique for holding the rope for a climber so that they are safe if they fall and that they won’t fall and hit the ground. Belaying, while sounding rather complicated, is actually an easy climbing skill to learn and to become a good belayer mostly requires lots of practice. A climbing hold is a shaped grip that is attached to a climbing wall for climbers to grab or step on. Climbing holds are arranged in paths, called routes, by specially trained route setters. Routes are marked with colored tape. Yes. Everyone entering the gym must fill out and sign a liability waiver. No exceptions.
